Red, White, and little boy Blue

Interior Design, Photography, & Wardrobe Styling: Linda Pordon

When your interior designer is also an interior and lifestyle photographer…you pretty much have no option but to get in the photos as well :). And honestly, what cuter way is there to show a finished space than to share how it’s used and loved by even the tiniest clients?

I know everyone says they have amazing clients, but this family is truly the best. Once we navigated Dad’s unexplored hatred of brass finishes, we were all in quick agreement on this room filled with “things that go” for their little boy.

A few details…

DESIGN GOAL

The goal of the room was to serve as a fun playroom and creative space for their 2-year-old son, but we also wanted it to grow with him beyond the toddler phase. It was important to have the main elements and decor lean a bit more sophisticated but to pair that with some of his current favorites - most notably anything that moves and firetrucks firetrucks firetrucks. I just loved the pattern play of stripes on pillows and walls with the plaid on the rug and the fun hand-drawn squiggles on the circular rug and sheets.

WHAT WE STARTED WITH

This was a pretty dreamy room from go. So light-filled with several larger windows. My favorite part is probably the angled ceiling over these existing built-in benches that adds so much charm. The aim was to brighten up some of the warmer tones in the carpeting and wall color and then MAKE IT FUN by creating little areas for play and rest.

MY FAVORITE FEATURES

So many things. The red, white, and blue pop art popsicle print. The Star Wars rug that is somehow still pretty beautiful…and 100% machine washable, which is ideal in a crafting zone! Adding the bed was a debate but we ended up loving the ability for cuddles and reading time, and hopefully cousin sleepovers. My absolute favorite item in the room are these red play chairs that are sturdy enough for some crafting time with Mom & Dad and stackable if they need to be out of the way for open play. And lastly, this wallpaper truly made the room and I love how it almost looks like watercolor art…a perfect backdrop for play.

So happy to capture this little man enjoying his new space and transforming from train conductor to firefighter to super hero :) And a huge thank you to this family for inviting me into their home for far longer than any of us expected with hopefully more laughs than furniture delays.
