What we started with
This room was designed for two brothers (a.k,a my two older sons) very close in age who kept asking to share a room. It started with little brother in a crib and evolved to matching twin beds. I had this Dash & Albert rug as a starting point and then found an image of that very rug with these handsome beds from McGee & Co. We had some vintage Pendleton blankets (but honestly never use them because they're not washing machine friendly and who needs that in a kids' room!? Not this lady).
My favorite details
This room was the easiest to source given my husband's parents have kept EVERY SINGLE sports item of his from his childhood. He allowed us to take his football helmet out of its very untouchable glass case to display (and inevitably run around the house with). The glove and baseballs are all his from his Little League games and beyond (sweetly marked with dates and opponents by his dad).
Other special touches to me are the two tennis rackets that my mother and grandfather used during their playing days and the custom photos of dice and jacks above the beds (photographed in collaboration with my oldest son).
Client's favorite thing about the room
This one is a mix of love and function. One boy said "sharing with my brother!" and the other said "the light!" A lot of thought went into this dual nightstand lamp because I knew they would love being able to control their own "reading" light and something about a lamp feels very big boy. Side bar: it is NOT fun when they don't agree that it should be lights out and one keeps turning a light on. And a P.S. to always use LED bulbs in kids’ rooms so they don't get hot! Did I learn this the hard way? You betcha.
Behind the scenes
I had mixed feelings about a shared room, but it has been one of the sweetest bonding experiences for our boys. Recently, our oldest moved to his own room (weeks in quarantine will make anyone want space I guess!) but they have somehow managed to have a "sleepover" almost every night and miss their giggling story tellings if not together.
